About

Hunker Down is a first-person wave shooter game with realistic reloading mechanics.

The target practice drones in the training centre have gone rogue and are converging on your position. You must survive by holding off waves of aerial and ground-based enemy drones that are trying to assault your bunker. You have two weapons and all the ammunition they could possibly need, however the weapons must be manually reloaded when their magazines run out. Waves gradually become more powerful over time. Trigger discipline and dexterous magazine-swapping skills are essential.

Summary of Contributions

Combat Design

Established the combat values for the enemies (i.e. health, speed) and weapons (i.e. damage, mag size), finding a balance where enemies were neither too weak nor tough.

Designed enemy units with modular pieces that distinguish the type enemy it is (i.e. tracked drones are slow but tough; aerial drones are fast but fragile).

Three early concepts were developed for the handling of the weapon. The 'anchor point' concept made it into the final product.

Gameplay Design

Developed concepts for enemy pathing. Additionally did a basic design of the level, but only to the extent that it concerned aspects of gameplay

(left) Attributed zones to areas of the level:

  • Fighting position: The player stays in this room and fires on the enemy drones as they approach

  • Dead-zones: Close-by areas in which the enemy drones will detonate. They are unreachable by the player

  • Live-Fire-Zone: Broadly represents anywhere the player can shoot

  • Spawn zones: Enemies spawn here before moving onto the LFZ. Enemies cannot be shot at in here
